Having a clog in your house is common. They can be a nuisance, but not uncommon. Understanding the causes and knowing preventable measures to take will help keep the headache at bay.

Common causes of a clogged drain:

Hair, soap scum buildup, grease, food scraps and even the wipes you might use in the bathroom can cause your pipes to become clogged.

Signs of a clogged drain:

  • You might notice your drain is slow or you might hear gurgling sounds, bad odors or standing water. They are all signs that you might have a clogged drain.

  • Ignoring the clog can have negative consequences and can lead to more serious problems including your toilet backing up.

Ways to help prevent a clogged drain:

  • When putting food down your garbage disposal make sure you run water at the same time. Remember the disposal is meant for small scraps of food, not an entire pot of food.

  • Avoid pouring grease down the drain; instead, let it cool and become solid before throwing it out.

  • Only flush toilet paper and human waste down the toilet. Avoid flushing sanitary products, wipes, or other items that can cause a clogged drain.

DIY Solutions:

  • Run hot water down the drain; this will sometimes dislodge minor clogs.

  • A plunger can sometimes be effective for minor clogs, but avoid using too much force so you do break something.

  • A sewer snake can also be effective in dislodging minor or stubborn clog; being careful to not force the line too far into the pipe.
